Ferrari Enzo – 2012 Overview, Release and Specifications

While Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo (pictured above with the 458 Italia) said at the IAA “we can never call it God!”, giving a name to the new Ferrari Enzo for 2012 is a tough one. The most iconic Ferrari of the last few years has inevitably been the Enzo. Speaking of which according to Ferrari it should be “Enzo Ferrari”, not the “Ferrari Enzo”. Nonetheless it’s successor is already waiting for it’s replacement. A crucial task right now will not be it’s tecnical aspects nor it’s handling (which will undoubtedly be fine), but giving it a name.

Traditionally Ferrari has never invented model names out of the blue, the choice has always reflected a deeper message. The 2010 Ferrari 599 GTO has not been the successor of the legendary 250 GTO of the sixties, but merely reflects the heritage of the model and the brand in general. The California from now, it´s name appeared for the first time in the fifties, reflected the exposure and importance to the American car market. And with the Ferrari family already represented in the model history (Dino and Enzo), they now once again face the difficult task of “naming” it’s most iconic model to-be.

A non-written rule of the prouncing horse is not to rely on any involvement of outsiders or third-parties in ascribing a new name. In fact as Gianluca Billo from Unico Nomen Italia explains, the art of “naming” (not to be confused with branding) is more difficult than you might think. You have to know the brand in detail, but also the linguistic and legal implications. Billo thinks that an “invented name” does not giustify the Ferrari brand as it relies on it’s world famous heritage. Naming a car to it’s own godfather couldn’t be more important he thinks. But who knows what the outcome will be.
